BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (USASOC News Service, May 3, 2010) – Afghan National Security Forces in Zabul province’s Shin Kay district secured a cache of IED-making material yesterday with follow-on support of U.S. Special Forces.
The Afghan National Army and Police in the area were involved in a half-hour firefight with about 30 insurgents before the discovery. The insurgents fled to a nearby village once they learned they were outgunned by the combined force of 20 ANA and ANP. ANSF called on their Coalition partners to assist in the examination of the area where insurgents were firing from and a search of a nearby village to which they fled.
The search revealed an abandoned cache of IED making material. Among the materials found were blasting caps, detonation cord, and other material consistent with the production of building and emplacing IEDs. |  |

S. Special Operations Forces, were attacked by insurgents near Khwaja Gawhar village, Almar district, Faryab province April 27. The Afghan-led presence patrol was on a mission to meet with Afghan citizens and local leaders when they were attacked by a large group of insurgents with small arms and RPG fires from the hills outside the village. A smaller group of approximately 10 insurgents maneuvered on the ridgeline above the small village and continued to launch undisciplined fires at the combined force and into the surrounding area endangering local residents. The partnered force retaliated with small-arms fires and precision guided munitions from Coalition air forces. During the fighting several insurgents were killed, while no civilian casualties or property damage was reported. | |
