160th SOAR NCO and Soldier of the Year Awards

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (USASOC News Service, April 9, 2010) –   Night Stalkers from a single battalion earned both the 2010 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) Non-Commissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year titles.

Staff Sgt. Jacob M. Barner, a section sergeant in his company’s armament shop, was named NCO of the Year; and Pfc. Lawrence E. Schores, a helicopter repairer, was named Soldier of the Year. Both serve with 1st Bn., 160th SOAR(A).

This was Barner’s second consecutive NCO of the Year title and Schores competed with about a year of Army service.

“The close results this year proved the level of commitment and skill each of you brings to our organization and the Army,” said Regiment Command Sgt. Maj. David L. Leamon. “It was obvious why each of you were sent to represent your units in this competition and you represented them extremely well.”

Civil Affairs Soldiers compete in Bataan Memorial Death March

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, March 31, 2010) – Sixteen Soldiers from the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) recently traveled to White Sands Missile Range, N.M., March 21 to participate in the grueling 26.2-mile 2010 Bataan Memorial Death March.

The intense and challenging footmarch covers a marathon’s length of sandy, mountainous terrain in honor of the World War II heroes who defended the Philippine Islands of Luzon and Corregidor. Tens of thousands of these brave Soldiers, Sailors and Marines were forced on a 61-mile march by their Japanese captors, with more than 11,000 men dying. It was in remembrance of these fallen comrades and their sacrifice that the Soldiers from the 95th CA Bde. (A), participated in the march.

    New 75th Rangers CO

FORT BENNING, Ga. (USASOC News Service, March 25, 2010) – The change of command for the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment took place beneath the moss-draped trees of Forsyth Park at 4 p.m. on Mar. 18.

Dignitaries, guests and those passing by watched as outgoing commander, Col. Brian Mennes, turned over his command to Lt. Col. Michael Foster during the colorful ceremony.

Col. Mennes has deployed twice since taking command of the battalion on July 1, 2008.  He said that leaving his family of Rangers was a bittersweet transition for he and his wife and children.

“This is the best job in the world in one of the best towns in the world,” he said. He also acknowledged great things ahead in his new job as a brigade commander at Fort Bragg.

“It’s a great day to move forward,” he said. But it’s been a joy to serve with these men. They define what selfless service looks like.  My only regret is that I didn’t have more time to spend with them.”

Now the opportunity to spend time with the Rangers belongs to the battalion’s current commander, Lt. Col. Michael Foster.
